Love Machine 2 (1976 SORC)
This photo sequence (by the late Tom Leutwiler) is of the Tanton design Love Machine 2 (US) during the 1976 Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC), with the boat bashing its way through the Gulf Stream in the Miami-Nassau race. The boat itself is of the classic early IOR type, heavy displacement and masthead rigged, with an enormous foretriangle, and quite different to the types of boats that were being developed here in NZ at the time. This photo became very famous and, not surprisingly, was used in an advertisement by a wet weather gear manufacturer.
